Dolphins produce a wide variety of sounds, however, the best studied are their whistles. Each dolphin produces a “signature” whistle that is unique to him or her. In humans parents name their children, but in dolphins, calves (baby dolphins) get to name themselves!
Here are two of the many signature whistles we have recorded from dolphins. These sounds are important to dolphins and they can even remember a signature whistle for over 20 years, even if they haven’t seen the other dolphin that uses that particular call in all that time.
